Brentwood School - Brentwoodian 2020

103 Jo Hardy For Ms Hardy, Design and Technology is without a doubt ‘the best subject in the School’. She loves the hands-on experience in the classroom, and loves seeing students learning the skills required to handle a range of tools and equipment, and making something of which they can be proud! She enjoys inspiring creativity and problem-solving skills in her students, watching them overcome challenges, and seeing them achieve great results. She was fortunate enough to know Mrs Asher before she joined Brentwood School - it was in fact Mrs Asher who encouraged her to train as a DT teacher in the first place! Beyond the classroom, Ms Hardy is a keen kayaker - currently a member of and coach at Chelmsford Canoe Club, she used to race, even coming second in the 130km-long Dordogne Integral race. She skis, swims, and does pilates, but is happiest being outdoors and near water. Indoors, her ideal meal would be moules marinières and frites, accompanied either by lemon tarte or Dulce de Leche ice cream. Her favourite songs include Mr Brightside by the Killers, and The Lovecats by The Cure. Favourite quotation I can resist anything… except temptation (Oscar Wilde) Advice for students If you say you can, you will; if you say you can’t, you won’t. Have a positive mindset - you can do it! Helen Howells Ms Howells has always had a passion for her subject - Food - since it allows her to exercise and share her skills in cooking culinary dishes and fine cuisine. She also teaches Design Technology, clearly demonstrating a steady hand and creative mind. Moreover, her Master’s Degree in Textiles allows her to understand the material demands of her subjects. Outside of school, Ms Howells has a wide variety of hobbies, including clay- pigeon shooting, horse riding, and chess. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her three-year-old springer spaniel, Dotty, and hunting for antiques in local car-boot sales. Her favourite food is a simple one for a Food teacher - fish fingers, beans, and chips, perhaps followed by vanilla ice cream. She enjoys listening to Led Zeppelin, and her favourite film is the Sean Connery classic, Dragonheart . Favourite quotation If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all Advice for students Treat others kindly and always be the best version of yourself Angela Goff Ms Goff joins us in the Chemistry Department after working in a laboratory straight after university. While this was a great opportunity to explore her passion for Chemistry, she became a teacher in the hope of more human interaction and variety. She loves the practical experiments, but most of all the chance to inspire others with her love of the subject. Ms Goff loves to keep her mind and body active in her spare time, whether that is spending time outdoors, immersing herself in other cultures, swimming, riding her bike, or reading. She enjoys pistachio ice cream and sushi (probably not at the same time, though), and if she could choose a superpower for herself, she’d like the ability to freeze time. Advice for students Don’t take life too seriously, but make sure to take it seriously enough - it takes practice and time to work out what level of “seriousness” is required and when. Mistakes are inevitable, just make sure to learn from them - it’s all about the journey!
