Brentwood School - Brentwoodian 2020

104 Andy Linton Mr Linton loves teaching Geography because no two lessons are the same; from teaching migration one lesson, to coastal erosion the next, and there is so much potential for students to bring wider knowledge into the classroom. He was inspired to take up this career when at school, after an inspirational conversation with the future director of the HMC. He is also enjoying being our new Head of Third Year, supporting his year group as they move up through the School and helping them to overcome the hurdles and challenges they face. Mr Linton’s two young children go a long way towards keeping him busy, with swimming and ballet lessons, bike rides and films! If he had the chance to choose the movie, then it may well be his favourite film, The Shawshank Redemption - or he would switch the channel to the latest Spurs match or the Formula 1. He is involved with his local church, and is looking forward to welcoming his new labradoodle puppy! Favourite quotation If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well Advice for students Make the most of every opportunity at school - work hard - be kind Caitlin Prouatt We are thrilled to have Dr Prouatt joining us in the Classics Department, where she will bring her impressive knowledge of Plutarch’s obscurest works to bear in the classroom. There is so much that she loves about Classics: the opportunity to introduce students to Latin and Greek for the first time, to guide them through texts, and act as a conduit for them to make their own progress and discoveries. She enjoys exploring Latin’s long, varied history that extends far beyond the Roman Empire, both geographically and chronologically, and looking back to find the etymologies of words. Dr Prouatt loves getting lost in nature, so going for walks features towards the top of her favourite hobbies. Others include reading, writing poetry, drawing, and updating her Classics Challenge Instagram! Her preferred food stays as firmly Mediterranean as her subject matter, as she enjoys Greek spanakopita and baklava. She is a fan of the works of Joan Baez (the song Love is Just a Four Letter Word ) and Joan Crawford (the film Whatever Happened to Baby Jane in particular). Favourite quotation The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled (Plutarch) Advice for students Go further! Find the things that you like in the subjects you study and pursue them. Don’t feel limited by the syllabus, but find where you can go beyond it. Use your teacher as a springboard. Engage to the best of your ability, and always have a go. Greg Justham Mr Justham joins us as both a Computer Science teacher and our new Academic Director for Innovative curriculum - a role which has already helped a great deal in the first few weeks of term! His love for his subject stems from the problem solving and computational thinking involved in Computer Science, and Mr Justham is looking forward to shaping the way that Brentwood School pupils think and learn to prepare them for a changing world. He first started teaching after working as a coach for local football teams - this inspired him to pursue his interest in nurturing talent, towards a PGCE, and into the classroom. Mr Justham enjoys spending time with his young daughter, playing football, and spectating matches whenever possible. His favourite foods include seafood and raspberry ripple ice cream, and he is a fan of Quentin Tarantino films - particularly Reservoir Dogs ! Favourite quotation Good, better, best. Never let it rest, until your good is better and your better is best (Tim Duncan) Advice for students Work hard at everything but never forget to have fun
