Brentwood School - Brentwoodian 2020
34 les Misérables Les Misérables , Brentwood School’s 2019 winter musical, was a huge success and drew in large audiences across six performances in December. Far from the Toby Carvery or Brentwood Council offices, a revolution was stirring in 1830’s Paris. Schoenberg’s adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic Les Misérables follows the rise of Jean Valjean (Neo Merrell) from chains to Mayorship, and his relentless pursuit by Inspector Javert (Theo Harris). Their intense clashes and heartfelt soliloquies were accompanied by the ever-growing atmosphere of unrest and revolution, with valiant Enjolras (Charles Tomlinson) leading the charge. Relief from the toil and endless struggle was provided by Thenardier (Matz Kiernan) and his wife (Aimee Mayhew). Massive dance sequences and drunken hilarity filled the auditorium adjacent to the death of desperate Fantine (performed tremendously by Hannah Walker and Chloe Sault alike) and the rise of Marius (Will Johnson) with his students. Marius’ story is incomplete without the love triangle of Cosette (Elizabeth Moore) and streetwise Eponine (Nia Richards), whose three-part harmonies and duets culminate in Nia’s heartbreaking solo which opens the second act.
