Brentwood School - Brentwoodian 2020

71 2019 and 2020 was yet another epic year for North House. Not only did we create some of the most iconic House events including House Fifa, but we also ranked among the top Houses in the School in multiple events, even during lockdown! Mr Murphy led an excellent House assembly each week, eager to impart the news of the week and provide us with an exuberant list of GooBs (glimpses of online brilliance). Sports Day was new territory for many of us, but became more inclusive than ever - and we were able to take part in numerous events. Unfortunately, North’s unequivocal excellence in sport was only just surpassed but nevertheless there were some excellent contributions and participation that made the day an overall success. So, looking back on the year, North has yet again managed to easily secure the (unofficial) title of the best House, and we look forward to the events and results of the next academic year! By Cameron Davies 2019 began extremely well for North House - a fresh start with Mr Murphy at the helm, and Mr McNiff joining the wonderful Madame Dearmer-Decup as Deputy. Mr Murphy quickly won the hearts and minds of all Northerners, wearing his trademark yellow t-shirt every Wednesday as a glowing beacon of inspiration to everyone in the School. There was no time for hesitation, however, as House Music arrived almost immediately, with feverish preparations, rehearsals, and practices for all. The evening itself was a huge success for North House - we won the Ensemble category with our Grease Medley , and came third overall in the entire Competition - a well-deserved result for all the hard work that we put in. West House was the first to kick things off with its House Week. During West Fest we participated in House Chess, again placing 3rd overall; particular mention must be made of the unsurpassable Shayan Gohil, who went undefeated for the entire week. During the after-school mayhem of Jenga and Connect 4, North was far from the top of the leaderboard, save for the efforts of Deema Nader and Pippa Cox, who won the Junior Connect 4; our week was beautifully capped off with a win in the Photography competition, in which Chloe Dewar’s photo, ‘Mushrooms on Bark’ was unanimously selected by the judging panel. During the Christmas fair we put on a wide variety of entertainments, such as a Lucky Dip, selling cups and bags of sweets and homemade brownies, alongside a ‘Guess the Name of the Dog’ competition! Though everyone’s input here was welcome, Jemima Mamelok was the star of the show, bringing in a ‘Win or Dare’ wheel and lots of prizes to be won! Soon, it was our time to shine - North House week arrived in the bitter cold of the January weather, and we ensured plenty for everyone to do! House Squash was well-attended by all Houses - we were delighted that we managed to win the Senior Boys’ category in a fiercely- contested final against West House’s players. More features of the week included an interesting and humbling WaterAid talk, dance routines timed to perfection and... a proposal at House Lip Sync?!? Far and away the most innovative and exciting event was House Fifa, however, which gained cross- House support, with Mr Wright commentating almost every evening after school. This event had an insane, ‘be-there-to-believe-it’ atmosphere, with extra-time winners, devastating defeats, and superb camaraderie all round. Between all of the goings on, approximately 120 pupils North
