Brentwood School - Brentwoodian 2020
74 Charity Highlights of the Year: Charity Christmas Fair - £312.27 Charity Clothes Swap - £32 Clarise Castleman’s incredible Walking Challenge £2,500 (approx.) James Maltby’s amazing Charity Cycle- £340 In the opening House Week, November’s West Fest, James Maltby, William Howard and Joseph Payne set the course record winning Frisbee Golf. We were undefeated and Senior Champions in Giant Jenga and Connect 4, a big well done to: Martha Machray, Isabella Noakes, Jack Webster, Jacob Sparks, Elliott Sparks, Kolapo Bola-Aileru, Adam Harding, Nuren Mussarrat, Catherine Prior, Tia Sharpe and Sam Lee! It was the Teacher Ensemble that stole the show however - the dream team is pictured below: North week was next. Could we win another House Week? Of course we could! In the House Lip Sync, Beth Linnell and Lucas Ring choreographed a superb performance culminating in a hilarious proposal from Second Year student Jack Webster to Miss Martin, which saw us narrowly miss out on first place. The ‘Turner Twins’ (Finlay and Louis) blew away all opposition in the House Fifa, creating history by winning every game without conceding a single goal and, in House Squash, THAT Friday lunchtime I will never forget. Oren Goddard overcame West House with Louis Turner to win the Junior Boys’ finals (a big thank you to Jake Sedgley and William Bell for being reserves). The rookie combination of Freya Collins and Isabel Blackwelll (who had never played before!) lost overall by just one single point in a thrilling final match Vs East (out of 6 matches!) and, although the Junior Girls also finished runners up, (after Zoe Smithers won her respective match in a high quality final Vs West) it meant we had enough aggregate points to win the Squash and North Week overall. That just summarises Weald doesn’t it? School House Week was next and we were on a roll. Our House Captain's Elect Superstar Volleyball team, which included Mr Giles and Mr Mickleburgh, overcame East House to secure 5th place. More importantly, we used nearly 50 players (from First Years to Staff) over just 3 matches, when only 6 allowed on court at one time, we should be incredibly proud of this record. Our All Star Basketball team faced South House in a thrilling final. Managed superbly by Fifth Year Emmanuel Olaniyan, the game went into 4 minutes of extra-time tied at 12-points all. With South leading 12-16 with just a minute left, we showed incredible fight and nerve to win 18-12 in a sensational all-round team display with Lennon ‘Magic’ Nagle picking up the MVP award. Our first ever Basketball finals win topped off yet another fantastic week. COVID then interrupted, but it didn’t stop Weald being creative in Lockdown. During South Week Sarah Blockley and her chocolate cupcakes and a traditional Simnel cake won the House Bake Off, (they sadly never made it to my doorstep!) Then, inspired by Captain Tom, our House Captains created a historic virtual Weald Week. What a week it was. Jodie Bradley organised a whole school Clap for Careers, Clarise Castleman convinced the School to Walk 500 Miles (and 500 more) and Sam Blundell held over 100 Fifa matches across all the Year Groups. If that wasn’t enough, First Year pupil, Harrison Farr, led a Stop Motion Challenge whilst Mrs Franklin organised a Staff Fruit and Veg carving contest. To top it off we held a Virtual House Quiz. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and especially quizmaster Fin Turner who entertained us all...I wonder if he ever found that wasp?! The final House Week was East Week where we incredibly won six of the seven competitions. Writing her name into history, Sammy Li was the star performer in East Week, winning both the Cryptic Crossword and Code Breaking Challenge (Pranita also came third!). On top of that, in a fiercely competitive field, she also won the Improvised Instruments competition! Freya Collins (another Weald star of 2019/20), produced a masterpiece to win the House Bake-off competition. Pranita Arun Prasadh won the Art Monochrome competition with two incredible entries. Weald’s Wizards (including Mrs Professor Minerva Carter) topped off the week winning an exciting Harry Potter quiz. I am not sure if I hindered the team more than anything, but I certainly enjoyed celebrating flying around Main School on my Nimbus 2000. A HUGE thank you to the Chess Team throughout the year - playing countless games, having incredible last second victories and producing our best overall performance as a House yet: Caroline Liu Adam Heffernan Lucas Burjack Pranita Prasadh Peculiar Oyedele Harrison Farr Gracie Coppell Nina Pert (Mr Walton) We finished the year with a historic Virtual Sports Day. We had 747 entries (the highest of any House), including 468 sporting entries and 279 House event entries and we finished in a nail- biting second overall. Incredible. The highlights were as follows:
