Brentwood School - Brentwoodian 2020
97 Nigel Carr Mr Carr joined Brentwood school in September 1977 to teach Economics and Mathematics, after reading Economics at Cambridge University and working briefly in the Central Statistical Office. Alongside over forty years of devoted service as an inspirational and passionate teacher, Mr Carr held a number of positions of responsibility: Head of Economics and Business Studies Department, Housemaster of South, and Housemaster of Hough. He was a diligent, impeccably organised and well-respected Contingent Commander of the CCF for over 10 years and numerous times! In this role he also commanded the Brentwood Remembrance Parade from 1989 to 2016, only turning the parade the wrong way once! Finally, he was Deputy Head from 1999-2015. In all of his roles Mr Carr was both successful and served the School in too many ways to number. The pupils and staff will be very grateful for many years to come because of the difference Mr Carr made to our lives. Mr Carr was highly regarded by colleagues as a trustworthy, thoughtful and measured leader. Selfless, passionate, academic and effective, he always led from the front, rolling up his sleeves and getting fully involved. Mr Carr always listened to every perspective and gave wise and helpful counsel in any situation. He supported countless pupils and staff through difficulties, always with compassion and sensitivity. Beyond these roles, Mr Carr was an ardent supporter of many co-curricular activities. A Cambridge Blue, he fenced for England in 1980 and for the Combined Services from 1990 - 1996, and supported fencing at the School, including leading the sport for a time. A quiet and determined adventurer, Mr Carr organised a vast array of School Expeditions in the UK, Pyrenees, Norway, Mongolia and Ecuador and South Africa. Unsurprisingly, he was also a stalwart of the Duke of Edinburgh programme, culminating in being the leader of Gold and the centre manager. In his retirement, Mr Carr’s altruism shines through. He will continue to advise trainee teachers at the University of Buckingham and will voluntarily train assessors for DofE. He will be missed by all his colleagues and we wish him a very long and happy retirement, travelling and adventuring for many years to come. Ian wignall Ian Wignall joined the PE Department at Brentwood School 16 years ago. He immediately made a significant impact on the Department, being full of energy and with a great work ethic. He was quickly promoted to Head of Football where he relished the chance to lead and develop the football programme. From there he took on the role of Head of Boys’ Games and coordinated a broad and varied boys’ games programme. His passion for sport, natural leadership qualities and incredible commitment to the School were later rewarded with promotion to Director of Sport. Whilst in this role Mr Wignall oversaw a significant expansion of both the PE Department and the sporting programme at Brentwood as well as being rewarded with numerous national successes across a variety of sports. In addition to his huge contribution to the School as Director of Sport, Mr Wignall proved himself to be an inspirational and energetic Head of Year to the Fourth and Fifth Year pupils. He worked hard to ensure that each student in his care developed both personally and academically and he always had their best interests at heart. His contribution to the School’s safeguarding team was much appreciated. We will miss him but wish him every success in his new role and know he will rise to the challenges it will afford him. Mr Wignall leaves us to take on the role of Assistant Principal at the Harris Academy, Riverside. We wish him the best of luck in his new adventure. leaving staff
