Brentwood School - Brentwoodian 2020

98 Barbara Daly Barbara Daly joined Brentwood School 18 years ago, and quickly introduced A level Food Technology. She was Promoted to Head of Department and spent nine years as HOD. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and her attention to detail and her practical expertise second to none, with all of her students and staff benefiting from her culinary skills. She introduced the Superchef House competition as part of Open Day, greatly enjoyed by students and visitors and had fun delivering the Sixth Form ‘Cooking for University’ course with Mr Taylor. As well as being part of the Food team Mrs Daly was also part of the Physical Education Department throughout her time at Brentwood, more recently coaching First Year hockey players. She helped out in Learning Support and even featured in the Geography Department making contour/gradient models out of card for Third Year CCF pupils. She did a stint in the History Department helping out with “Horrible Histories” for the Second Years and more recently was responsible for digging the extra flower bed at the front of the School, and supporting VSA pupils in setting up the new pupil flower bed outside the greenhouse. Mrs Daly will be greatly missed and we wish her a long and happy retirement. David Taylor We said goodbye to David Taylor in 2017 when he stepped down as Second Master but were fortunate to retain him in a part- time role. Mr Taylor had joined the staff in 1997 as Academic Deputy and was appointed Second Master in 1997, having previously been Deputy Head at Chelmsford County High School. He was responsible for implementing many new ideas to Brentwood with regard to improving pupil progress and attainment and developing our curriculum. He also had a national role, organising the HMC Academic Deputy Heads’ Conference for many years. Mr Taylor taught music, directed numerous choirs, played the viola regularly in school concerts and was heavily involved with the Old Brentwoods. We wish him and his family well as he now enters retirement. Rob Higgins Rob Higgins first joined the School in 2014 as a Teacher of English. Many of you will have benefited from his infectious enthusiasm for literature, his inspiring lessons, and his dedication to every one of his students. He held responsibilities in leading Creative and Critical Thinking, as Deputy Director of IB, and Head of Year, before being promoted to Director of Sixth Form and IB on the Senior Leadership Team. In his Sixth Form role, he worked tirelessly, ensuring that every student got the support they needed, and repeatedly going above and beyond what was expected. He was considerate and caring, had high standards, wanted the best from everyone, and gave his own time generously. He will be a loss to the School, and we wish him the very best with his relocation to Bromsgrove. Siobhan Coady Siobhan Coady joined the Physics team three years ago and was a valuable member of the Department. We will miss her smile and cheery “good morning”. Mrs Coady dedicated her time as a leader of the Friday afternoon STEM club as well as being a key member of the boarding team at Mill Hill and a Head of Second Year. Mrs Coady is moving on to become a Year Leader at Marshalls Park Academy. We wish her all the best and every success. Katie Gellard Katie Gellard rejoined us last year after spending time travelling. She was not only of great help on Fridays, taking on cover, but also led the Third Years in the Army and was a key part of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh programme. We are sure, through both the CCF and DofE, Miss Gellard’s path will continue to be part of ours and, as she undertakes her new role as Head of Art at Westcliff school - we wish her all the best.
